About 27% of journeys in the Netherlands are by bicycle

Did you know? 27% of all journeys in the Netherlands are made by bicycle.

Cycling is a popular mode of transportation in the Netherlands, with more than a quarter of all trips being made on two wheels. This impressive statistic highlights the country's commitment to sustainable and efficient travel.

In some Dutch cities, the percentage of journeys made by bicycle is even higher, showcasing the strong cycling culture. To support this, the central government has encouraged local authorities to develop good regional cycling routes.

Cycle superhighways play a crucial role in promoting bicycle use. There are currently around 25 of these superhighways either in use or under construction, providing cyclists with safe and efficient routes.

Additionally, employers in the Netherlands can offer a tax-free mileage allowance to cyclists, further incentivizing this eco-friendly mode of transport. Since January 2020, tax rules for using a company bicycle for private purposes have been simplified, making cycling an even more attractive option.
